Quick Hitters 76ers hire former Raptors coach Nick Nurse, AP source says

PHILADELPHIA — Joel embiid and the 76ers battled in yet another playoff game with the Raptors, this time in 2022, when the all-star center barked at Toronto coach Nick Nurse — in a quite PG-13 fashion — to stop whining about foul calls.

embiid’s beef with Nurse didn’t end in the playoffs. after the twotime NBA scoring champion was held — held, in quotes — to 28 points in a 2022 regular-season game, embiid charged the Raptors “don’t care about winning” as long as a player of his stature was held below his scoring average.

Hey, what could go wrong this season? The 76ers didn’t even play the Raptors in the playoffs.

yet, when Brooklyn frustrated embiid in a first-round series, the league MVP complained the Nets “kind of took the Nick Nurse route of begging for free throws and calling out the referees.”

OK, the introductions might be awkward. Or at least good for a laugh. But the 76ers are now counting on embiid and Nurse to work together in a productive relationship as the new pair chases the franchise’s first championship since 1983.

Nevada Legislators weigh plan to put MLB stadium on Las Vegas Strip

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Lawmakers are considering a proposal to finance and incentivize construction of a Major League Baseball stadium on the Las Vegas strip, with an initial public hearing scheduled Monday at the Nevada Legislature.

The plan would authorize up to $380 million in incentives for the potential $1.5 billion retractable-roof stadium, mainly through state transferable tax credits and county bonds to help provide a home for the Oakland athletics. The state would forgo up to $180 million in transferable tax credits, with a cap at $36 million per year. The $120 million in county bonds would help with construction costs and be paid off gradually.

The proposal’s price tag and behind-the-scenes negotiations have sparked debate about public subsidies and equity in state economic development efforts.

state lawmakers also are considering billions of dollars in tax credits to bring major film studios to Las Vegas. The governor’s office of economic development has approved hundreds of millions of dollars in tax abatements for Tesla in efforts to broaden Nevada’s tourism and gaming-based economy.

Padres claim 2-time Allstar catcher Gary Sánchez off waivers from Mets

san DIEGO — The scuffling san diego Padres claimed catcher Gary sánchez off waivers from the New york Mets on Monday night.

The two-time all-star was designated for assignment last Thursday after playing in three games for the Mets. He went 1 for 6 with three strikeouts and an RBI, looking shaky at times behind the plate.

With the disappointing Padres (24-29) getting meager offensive production at catcher, they hope sánchez can provide a boost. austin Nola is batting .131 with three extra-base hits and a paltry .434 OPS in 39 games. His part-time platoon partner, second-stringer Brett sullivan, is hitting .170 with four extra-base hits and a .482 OPS in 21 games since getting called up from the minors april 16.

Luis Campusano has been on the injured list since april 17 and is expected to be sidelined until around the all-star break following left thumb surgery.
