THE BENEFITS OF BEING A YUMA COUNTY EMPLOYEE

By Martin Garcia, Management Analyst for City of Yuma

EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES HAVE significantly changed in the public and private sectors in the last few years due to the record number of employees that have quit their jobs.

According to the Harvard Business Review, over 47 million people voluntarily quit their jobs in 2021. A survey conducted in February 2022 by the Pew Research Center showed that people who quit a job in

2021 did so because of low pay, no opportunities for advancement, feeling disrespected at work, child care issues, lack of flexibility to choose work hours, and not having good benefits like health insurance and paid time off. Initially, many employers called the mass quitting during the pandemic the great resignation.

However, experts now call it the great reshuffle because people were not quitting to retire or leave the labor force but to find better jobs instead. According to Forbes, people switched occupations because of compensation, a company’s culture, an unpredictable work schedule, leadership, and the ability to work from home.

Yuma County has many benefits it offers its employees. County employees can benefit from the health insurance, dental, and vision plans the County offers. tion is confidential.

Depending on which County agency you would like to work for, there are five different retirement plans that a County employee may fall under.

The five retirement plans are the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), Court Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (ACORP), Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (CORP), Elected Officials Retirement Plan (EORP), and Public Safety Officers Retirement System (PSPRS). These retirement plans are a great benefit because they provide people additional money during their retirement on top of their Social Security pay.
